Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 21, 2012

TODAY (Green) Is 53:10-11, Heb 4:14-16, Mk 10:35-45

NEXT WEEK (Green) Jer 31:7-9, Heb 5:1-6, Mk 10:46-52

James and John ask Jesus to share in his glory. Jesus tells them, “You do not know what you asking.” Jesus redirects James’ and John’s seeking places of honor to what is at the core of discipleship: drink the cup of suffering and be baptized into his death. Discipleship is not about seeking places of honor, but about serving. Service is the vocation of all who want to follow Jesus to real glory. Hardly were James and John prepared for the implications of their question!
