Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time
September 9, 2012

TODAY (Green) Is 35:4-7a, Jas 2:1-5, Mk 7:31-37

NEXT WEEK (Green) Is 50:5-9a, Jas 2:14-18, Mk 8:27-35

“Be opened” Jesus commands the deaf-mute man as he heals him. This encounter, however, is more than a matter of physical healing. It is a sign of salvation; God’s superabundant life breaking open closed human condition. Further, what Jesus commands with respect to the deaf-mute man, he commands with respect to us. When we encounter Jesus, he commands “Be opened!” and we too are healed: our ears are opened to hear the Good News and our tongues are loosened to proclaim it.

CHRISTIAN STEWARDSHIP:
Paul tutored his Christian contemporaries in the blessed art of giving; “Everyone must give according to what he has inwardly decided; not sadly, not grudgingly, for God loves a cheerful giver. God can multiply his favors among you so that you may always have enough of everything and even a surplus for good works.” (2 Cor 9:7-8).
Paul wanted everybody to know that the Lord would never be surpassed in generosity: “My God in turn will supply all your needs fully, in a way worthy of his magnificent riches in Christ Jesus” (Phil 4:19).
The emphasis was on giving to the Lord.
When David invited the people to give for the Temple, they responded with eagerness and joy. Although their offerings went into the structure itself, it was to the Lord that they gave: The people rejoiced over these freewill offerings, which had been contributed to the Lord wholeheartedly” (1 Chr 29:9).
Your giving is the key to the success of the church plans and programs. To help us meet our obligations, please pray about TITHING and becoming GOOD STEWARDS by obtaining Offertory Envelopes (available in the Marian Hall) as a weekly reminder to support your church.

MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES
God of all goodness, look with love on those who wait for the safe return of their loved ones who serve in the armed forces of their country. In faith and hope we turn to you for comfort. Grant that we may trust in your mercy and send an angel to sustain us as we await their safe return. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
