Twenty-second Sunday In Ordinary Time

September 1, 2013

TODAY (Green) Sir 3:17-18, 20, 28-29; Heb 12:18-19, 22-24a; Lk 14:1, 7-14

NEXT WEEK (Green) Wis 9:13-18b; Phlm 9-10, 12-17; Lk 14:25-33

Jesus challenges both guests and hosts at a dinner. Jesus calls the guests to let go of seeking places of honor and to choose seats that leads to being called “to a higher position.” Jesus calls the hosts to invite as his guests those who have only themselves to give in return, for which the hosts will be repaid at the ‘resurrection of the righteous.” Ultimately this gospel is about relationships. Relationships among themselves that build upon true humility and unrequited generosity deepen our relationship with the divine Host, who calls us “to a higher position.” Liturgy

Paul tutored his Christian contemporaries in the blessed art of giving: “Everyone must give according to what he has inwardly decided; not sadly, not grudgingly, for God loves a cheerful giver. God can multiply his favors among you so that you may always have enough of everything and even a surplus for good works.” (2 Cor 9:7-8). Paul wanted everybody to know that the Lord would never be surpassed in generosity: My God in turn will supply your needs fully, in a way worthy of his magnificent riches in Christ Jesus.” (Phil 4:19) The emphasis was on giving to the Lord. When David invited the people to give for the Temple, they responded with eagerness and joy. Although their offerings went into the structure itself, it was to the Lord they gave: The people rejoiced over these freewill offerings, which had been contributed to the Lord wholehearted.” (1 Chr 29:9) Your giving is the key to the success of the church plans and programs. To help us meet our obligations, please pray about TITHING, and become good STEWARDS by obtaining Offertory Envelopes available in the Marian Hall, as a reminder to support your church.

God of all goodness, look with love on those who wait for the safe return of their loved ones who serve in the armed forces of their country. In faith and hope we turn to you for comfort. Grant that we may trust in your mercy and send an angel to sustain us as we await their safe return. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
