Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 26, 2012

TODAY (Green) Jos 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b; Eph 5:21-32; Jn 6:60-69

NEXT WEEK (Green) Dt 4:1-2, 6-8; Jas 1:17-18; 21b- 22, 27; Mk 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

Failure, rejection and isolation: these are the themes of today’s remarkable Gospel - but they are not all. In the face of them we see perseverance, fidelity and trust. Above all there is an adherence to the truth that is truly amazing. Jesus speaks the truth to all who will listen, and if they find that truth “ intolerable “ they are free to leave, just as they are free to believe. No one who reads the passage could accuse Jesus of being interested in fame or fortune or the simple accumulation of followers. He didn’t play the ‘numbers game’. Even more amazing is that when his followers seem to be down to their lowest ebb, he turns to the Twelve and gives them freedom to go as well. Peter’s reply, when he speaks of their belief, is the only answer that matters; it is spirit and life that replies, not the flesh, which has nothing to offer. Living liturgy

Stewardship is living out Christ’s instruction to “love one another as I have loved you.” Stewardship is caring. Our offering of our time, talent, and treasure is one way of saying: We belong to the Lord and to one another. It is an:
Act of Faith: we profess that we belong to God and that all we possess is His.
Act of Trust: We place our life in God’s loving hands and make Him our treasure.
Act of worship: We adore Him as the giver of all good gifts.
Act of belonging: We unite our offering with the rest of our Parish Family so that together we might care for the needs of one another, especially the poor.
Your giving is the key to the success of the church plans and programs. To help us meet our obligations, please pray about TITHING and becoming GOOD STEWARDS by obtaining Offertory Envelopes (available in the Marian Hall) as a weekly reminder to support your church.

God of all goodness, look with love on those who wait for the safe return of their loved ones who serve in the armed forces of their country. In faith and hope we turn to you for comfort. Grant that we may trust in your mercy and send an angel to sustain us as we await their safe return. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
