Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 19, 2012

TODAY (Green) Prv.9:1-6. Eph 5:15-20, Jn 6:51-58

NEXT WEEK (Green) Jos 24:1-2a, 15-17,18b, Eph 5:21-32, Jn 6:60-69

Over the past few weeks, second readings at Sunday Mass have been taken from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. Paul has been providing an ongoing instruction on what it means to live and share God’s life now. Paul was writing to people who lived in the midst of pagan activity. That is why Paul’s words are still applicable to us. That is not to say that our world is monstrously evil, that nastiness surrounds us, or that everyone is out to get us. That is not true. What is true, however, is that times are tough. Our society pressures us to look out for ourselves, to take the best advantage we can, often without giving much thought to the other person. Paul also urges us to take the best advantage we can, but with constant regard for the other person. And the best advantage we can take is to remember that Christ is with us—is in us—now. CHRISTIAN STEWARDSHIP is the wise use of God’s gifts. As God’s steward, you are called to: MANAGE YOUR RESOURCES WISELY—your time, talent, income and possessions. FOCUS ON SERVING GOD—and others. TAKE AN ACTIVE ROLE in your church. Effective support of your church is wise stewardship. YOUR SUPPORT HELPS YOUR CHURCH TO BE A GOOD STEWARD, TOO! Your church is called to: Care for its members, in joy and sorrow. Fulfill its commitment to carry out God’s will. Reveal God’s Word to people, clearly and openly, through teaching, preaching, and by example. Strive to enrich the ways in which God works in our lives. By giving to the church, you put
your resources in God’s hands.
Your giving is the key to the success of the church plans and programs. To help us meet our obligations, please pray about TITHING and becoming GOOD STEWARDS by obtaining Offertory Envelopes (available in the Marian Hall) as a weekly reminder to support your church.

God of all goodness, look with love on those who wait for the safe return of their loved ones who serve in the armed forces of their country. In faith and hope we turn to you for comfort. Grant that we may trust in your mercy and send an angel to sustain us as we await their safe return. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
