First Sunday of Lent
 March 13, 2011

TODAY (Violet)              NEXT WEEK (Violet)   Gn 2:7-9; 3:1-7    Gn 12:1-4a
Rom 5:12-19                                                   2 Tm 1:8b-10
Mt 4:1-11                                                              Mt 17:1-9
Because Jesus fasted and was hungry, he knew that for which he really hungered. For this reason, none of the temptations—for satisfaction, power, wealth—caused him to yield. He never lost sight of the God whom he served and whose will he came to fulfill. The purpose of our fasting during Lent is to lead us, like Jesus, to hunger only for God and, like Jesus, to choose to serve only God.

The Lenten season is a time of sacrifice throughout the Universal Church. Fast and abstinence are to be observed on ASH WEDNESDAY and GOOD FRIDAY. All Catholics who have reached their 18th birthday and are less than 60 years old are bound to observe the fast, by which they are limited to a single full meal during the course of the day. All Catholics who have reached their 14th birthday are bound to observe days of abstinence during which no meat may be eaten. All the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. Lent is also a season in which prayer, the reception of the sacraments, charity and almsgiving are emphasized.

Please remember that when you fast on simple meals, to remember the poor. Take the money you would have spent on more expensive meal and put it in the Rice Bowl. God bless you for your kindness and thoughtfulness.

God has given us all that we have. God gave you your life, health and prosperity, the earth and the Gospel. Everything is a gift from God. Jesus invites us to be disciples. You are invited to answer Jesus’ call to follow his example of Christian living. Disciples are stewards. Being a disciple means committing your heart and mind—your whole life—to God. Being a good steward is part of discipleship. Being a good steward means being generous with your time, talent and treasure.
REMEMBER, Tithing becomes easier if we set aside the Lord’s portion and give it to him.
Your giving is the key to the success of church plans and programs. To help us meet our obligations, please pray about TITHING and becoming GOOD STEWARDS by obtaining Offertory Envelopes available in the Marian Hall as a weekly reminder to support your church.
