Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 13, 2011

TODAY (Green) NEXT WEEK (Green) Sir 15:15-20 Lv 19:1-2, 17-18
1 Cor 2:6-10 1 Cor 3:16-23, Mt 5:17-37 Mt 5:38-48

The point of Jesus’ lengthy discourse is clear: he is challenging us to a whole new covenantal basis for interpreting God’s law. Rather than looking at the minimal letter of the law, we are to look at the spirit of the law calling us to a much fuller way of relating to God and one another. Jesus’ new covenant is built on right relationships that extend beyond the letter of the law when we choose fullness of life, goodness, and justice.

Paul tutored his Christian contemporaries in the blessed art of giving: Everyone must give according to what he has inwardly decided; not sadly, not grudgingly, for God loves a cheerful giver. God can multiply his favors among you so that you may always have enough of everything and even a surplus for good works” (2 Cor 9:7-8)
Paul wanted everybody to know that the Lord would never be surpassed in generosity “My God in turn will supply your needs fully, in a way worthy of his magnificent riches in Christ Jesus.” (Phil 4:19)
The emphasis was on giving to the Lord.
When David invited the people to give for the Temple, they responded with eagerness and joy. Although their offerings went into the structure itself, it was to the Lord that they gave: The people rejoiced over these freewill offerings, which had been contributed to the Lord wholeheartedly” (1 Chr 29:9).
Your giving is the key to the success of the church plans and programs. To help us meet our obligations, please pray about TITHING and becoming GOOD STEWARDS, by obtaining Offertory Envelopes available in the Marian Hall as a weekly reminder to support your church.

Offertory Envelopes

Offertory envelopes are available in the Marian Hall. As a family or individual, start praying now as to what your “tithe” will be. How about giving God a raise?
